Puzzle 17 - Circle area


Find the area of that circle which has its center on side AC=354 units, of triangle ABC, and touches the sides AB=590 units and BC=472 units.

The triangle given is right triangle with ratio of sides AC:AB:BC=3:5:4 If 118r is the radius, then by secant-tangent rule "If a secant segment and tangent segment are drawn to a circle from the same external point, the product of the length of the secant segment and its external part equals the square of the length of the tangent segment.", (3-2r)3=1. This gives r=4/3 and hence the radius 157.33
